The Sustainable Wedding Alliance (SWA) has today announced that it has been accredited as a Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation, highlighting the organisation’s dedication towards tackling climate change, reducing its organisational carbon emissions, and its commitment to working towards a zero carbon future within the wedding industry and beyond.
Carbon Literacy is defined as, “An awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis,” and revolves around a day’s worth of learning and action on climate change.
The Sustainable Wedding Alliance first engaged with Carbon Literacy in April 2023 when developing a course for wedding professionals, led by SWA Founder & CEO Michelle Miles, a certified Carbon Literacy trainer. As a result, a significant number of SWA members, and professional from across the industry received the training and went on to become formally certified as Carbon Literate.
A Carbon Literate Organisation is an organisation that has been accredited by The Carbon Literacy Project as being “culturally Carbon Literate”; maintaining a substantial proportion of its team or group as Carbon Literate and demonstrating its Carbon Literacy. CLO accreditation is a tiered system with Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum levels, requiring increasing levels of commitment to action on climate change and creating a low-carbon culture.
What changes have been implemented to achieve the awarded level?:
To become accredited as a Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation, the Sustainable Wedding Alliance trained a significant percentage of staff and members from across the industry using bespoke Carbon Literacy training (Carbon Literacy Training for Wedding Professionals) developed and delivered by Michelle Miles. This training focused on the specific challenges and opportunities for sustainability within the wedding industry.
