International Women’s Day: Celebrating female leaders in Sustainability

Mar 8, 2021

Today, Monday 8th March is International Women’s Day and this year’s campaign Choose to Challenge, calls on us all to think about what we do in our own lives and businesses, taking action to promote a more sustainable future and celebrating those women that have led the way for us.  After all, a challenged world is an alert world. And from challenge comes change. So let’s all #ChooseToChallenge.

First celebrated in 1911, International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating women’s achievements – social, economic, cultural or political. Although the day was started a century ago, there are still very good reasons to mark it now. But this year’s celebration will be different for many, there will be no in person events, no arts performances, talks, rallies, networking, conferences or marches. Those that want to join a virtual event, may find the “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world” virtual event interesting. It celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the Sustainable Wedding Alliance our mission is to drive sustainable change in the wedding industry. We strive to create an inclusive environment, built on equality, helping business owners to develop their business in a more sustainable, environmentally conscious way. The wedding industry has many female owned and led businesses. Staggeringly, data released by UN Women suggests that the pandemic could put gender equality back by 25 years, as a result of women doing significantly more domestic chores and family care.

Women of the world want, and deserve an equal future, one that’s sustainable, peaceful, and with equal rights and opportunities.

“One individual cannot possibly make a difference, alone. It is individual efforts, collectively, that makes a noticeable difference—all the difference in the world!” Jane Goodall

From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge.
