Why your Wedding Business needs a Carbon Reduction Plan

Oct 2, 2025

We all know the wedding industry is built on creating magic. But the reality is that the confetti, imported blooms, the travel, and the energy – they all leave a mark. For every florist, planner, venue manager, celebrant and photographer reading this, understanding and tackling your carbon footprint isn’t just a moral imperative; it’s the sharpest commercial decision you can make right now.

Couples today are savvier than ever. They’re looking past the pretty pictures and asking the tough questions about ethical sourcing and environmental impact. Ignoring your emissions leaves your business exposed. A Carbon Reduction Plan is your roadmap, it shows commitment, earns trust, and, best of all, makes your business leaner, more innovative, and more profitable.

Here are the top seven non-negotiable actions we encourage every Sustainable Wedding Alliance member to implement to genuinely reduce their footprint.

1. Measure Your Carbon Footprint: Start with Clarity

You simply cannot manage what you haven’t measured. This is the foundational step. You need to know exactly where your energy is being spent, literally and figuratively. Start by calculating your emissions:

  • Scope 1: Think about the fuel your work van uses or the gas heating in your venue – the ‘burn’ scope
  • Scope 2: Your purchased electricity (this is usually the easiest to change) – the ‘buy’ scope
  • Scope 3: This is the big one for most of us. It includes your supply chain (e.g., imported goods, flower air miles), your team’s commute, and client travel

Measuring isn’t about shaming; it’s about identifying leaks. Pinpointing high-emission areas often reveals where you’re wasting money on inefficient practices too. Use the tools available, don’t wait for perfection, just get the first measurement done!

2. Cut Energy Emissions: Prioritise Renewables and Efficiency

For venues and anyone operating a physical space, this is your immediate win. Energy consumption is usually a massive chunk of your overall footprint (and finances).

Switch to a 100% Renewable Tariff – This is often the fastest, most effective way to address your Scope 2 emissions. Make sure your supplier provides verifiable REGOs (Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin).

Become Energy Obsessed – Conduct a quick energy audit. Simple efficiency tweaks, upgrading old boilers, switching to LEDs, insulating your studio, or installing smart heating controls can cut bills dramatically while reducing your reliance on non-renewable sources.

3. Engage Your Team: Make it a Collective Mission

Your team is your engine room for change. A carbon plan implemented only by management is doomed to fail.

Educate and Empower – Run a quick session on the SWA’s principles. Explain why reducing emissions matters to the business and to them personally. Invite your team to attend Carbon Literacy Training for Wedding Professionals, it’s a fantastic course to develop the team’s knowledge and confidence when talking about carbon emissions.

Delegate Ownership – Create a ‘Green Champion’ or a small team responsible for tracking your sustainable goals/objectives. When your team owns the mission, the results are exponentially better.

Celebrate Wins – Acknowledge efforts publicly. Did the catering team successfully reduce food waste by 15% this month? Celebrate it! Not just internally but externally too. It’s important to avoid greenwashing, so include the relevant evidence too.

4. Cut Waste and Embed Circularity: From Throwaway to Treasured

Waste is a huge environmental problem, and it’s also a drain on your budget. We need to move away from linear consumption (take, make, waste) toward a circular model (rethink, reduce, reuse). Which can feel like a big undertaking, but it doesn’t need to be. Break it down, start measuring your waste and make a plan to reduce it.

Stop the Landfill Leaks – Implement stringent recycling and, where necessary, composting systems. This is non-negotiable for florists (green waste) and caterers (food waste – prep and plate).

Prioritise Reuse – For planners and stylists, this could mean favouring reusable or rental decor over cheap, single-use (not just plastics, but all single use). For venues, it could mean investing in durable linens, avoiding disposable single use toiletries, or working with your suppliers to reduce packaging.

5. Engage Your Supply Chain: Extend Your Reach

Your suppliers are responsible for your biggest emissions chunk (Scope 3). So it’s important you actively choose to buy from businesses that share your commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction.

Ask the Right Questions – Use the SWA’s procurement checklists (available to members). Ask suppliers about their energy sources, their waste policies, and their commitment to ethical labour.

Collaborate for Good – Work with key suppliers, for example, your linen company or your printer to find innovative solutions. Can deliveries be consolidated? Can packaging be taken back and reused?

Localism is Key – By prioritising local, UK-based suppliers, you inherently reduce transport emissions and inject money back into your regional economy.

6. Make Sustainable Procurement Standard

Don’t let ethical sourcing be a one-off decision; make it policy. Embed your commitment into a formal Sustainable Procurement Policy for your entire business. We have seen this work really well in larger businesses, as it gives everyone in the team a clear framework to work through when purchasing or leasing anything, but that doesn’t mean small businesses shouldn’t also have a policy, in fact we encourage all businesses to have one.

Mandatory Vetting – Every time you purchase or lease goods or services, you should use your procurement checklist. This ensures consistency and prevents mission drift.

Think Lifecycle – Always consider the entire lifecycle of a product: where the materials come from, how it’s made, how long it will last, and how it will be disposed of.

7. Be Part of a Conscious Community: The Power of the Alliance

The journey to reducing your carbon footprint is complex. You don’t have to navigate it alone. That’s why the Sustainable Wedding Alliance exists.

Join the SWA By joining our community, you gain immediate access to expert guides, tools, and, most importantly, a network of UK wedding professionals facing the exact same challenges. We share best practices, celebrate progress, and collectively amplify our voice.

Learn and Lead – Use the SWA membership platform to learn from certified members and experts. Your participation not only helps you succeed but helps the entire industry raise its standards.

Putting a Carbon Reduction Plan in place is the most honest, strategic, and forward-thinking move your wedding business can make right now. It’s about building a legacy where beautiful celebrations and a thriving planet go hand-in-hand. Let’s make this happen, together.
